What is a perspective study? AI audience research, explained

A perspective study is an AI-assisted analysis of real public conversation that groups what people say into personas, tensions and moments, with every finding linked to the posts that evidence it. Mindfuse runs them on SOMIN, an AI audience-research platform, then adds human cultural interpretation and validation for Singapore and SEA.
Why do we need a different kind of audience research?
Surveys measure what people say when asked. Focus groups capture what people say in front of others. Both are useful and both struggle with the subjects that matter most in this region: face, honesty, family duty, money. People are polite in research settings. They are candid in their own conversations.
A perspective study starts where people are already candid. It reads public posts, comments and discussions at scale and asks: what are people wrestling with, in their own words?
Definitions
- Perspective study: an analysis of real conversations that surfaces personas, tensions and moments for a defined audience and topic.
- Tension study: Mindfuse's engagement built on perspective studies, adding cultural interpretation and validation.
- Traceability: the ability to follow any conclusion back to the source posts.
- Validation: testing findings with real people from the audience before they shape strategy.
How does a Mindfuse tension study work?
- Frame the question. We agree the audience, market and decision the study must inform. "Understand Gen Z" is too broad; "understand why young professionals delay buying insurance" is workable.
- Run the perspective study. SOMIN reads relevant conversations and clusters them into candidate personas, tensions and moments, each linked to evidence.
- Interpret the cultural code. Our team reads the clusters with cultural context: what a joke really means, when indirectness is politeness, how code-switching changes tone.
- Validate with people. Short sessions with members of the audience check that the language and tensions feel true.
- Write insights and angles. Each insight combines persona, tension and angle in one briefable sentence, with the evidence attached.
Where does AI stop and human judgement start?
AI is strong at reading volume, spotting recurring patterns and keeping the evidence organised. It is weaker at deciding what a pattern means in a specific culture and at judging what would be respectful to say back. That split is deliberate. It reflects a principle from SOMIN's listening on trust: conversations first, data second, and every AI conclusion checkable against the posts behind it.
It also reflects data dignity. We work with themes and tensions, never with profiles of individuals, and we do not single out people whose posts appear in the evidence.
What does a study produce?
- Three to five personas defined by situation and voice.
- One active tension per persona, written as "X versus Y".
- Moments when each tension becomes urgent, mapped to channels.
- Insight sentences and suggested angles.
- Cultural guidance on tone, register and things to avoid.
- An evidence trail for every claim.
For an example of how those outputs combine, see our guide to personas versus tensions and our method for segmenting Gen Z by tension.
How does this connect to the wider SOMIN toolset?
Perspective studies are one part of what SOMIN does. Its reporting and comparison with other strategy tools explain where it sits relative to listening and survey platforms. For case reading, the Fujifilm case study shows audience research shaping a brand's communication. Across the SOMIN partner network, each sibling applies the same evidence base differently: GPT5 Marketing feeds it into reasoning-model workflows, while Mindfuse focuses on the psychology and culture.
We have also shared parts of this method with practitioners through Marketing Mondays, the Singapore community and weekly show where one real signal is decoded each Monday.
Is a perspective study right for your question?
- Is the topic one people discuss publicly? If not, interviews may be better.
- Is the decision about motivation or tone, rather than pricing or usability?
- Do you need to understand several communities or markets at once?
- Do stakeholders need to see the evidence, not just the conclusion?
If you answered yes to most, a tension study is likely a good fit.
What are the limits of a perspective study?
Every method has blind spots, and naming them builds trust. Public conversation over-represents people who post and under-represents those who stay offline or in closed groups, including many older audiences. Some topics, such as health or personal finance, are discussed less openly, so evidence may be thinner. Sarcasm, in-jokes and Singlish can be misread without cultural review. We address these by stating sample limits in every report, combining studies with interviews where the audience is quieter online, and having native speakers check the interpretation of ambiguous material. A study is a strong starting point for understanding motives and tensions; it is not a census, and it should not be used to size markets on its own.
We also recommend repeating a study when conditions shift. A price rise, a cost-of-living squeeze or a cultural flashpoint can change which tensions are active within months. A light refresh, reading the same audience again against the original evidence, shows what has moved and what has held, and it keeps your personas from quietly going stale while the brief still cites them.
The point of view
The best audience insight in Southeast Asia comes from listening where people are already honest, then interpreting what they mean with cultural care. AI makes the listening possible at scale. People make the meaning trustworthy. That combination is what Mindfuse is built on.

Frequently asked questions
Is a perspective study the same as social listening?
They are related. Listening tracks volume and sentiment over time; a perspective study interprets conversations to find personas, tensions and moments for a specific question.
Which languages can a study cover?
Studies can include English, Singlish and major regional languages. Our team reviews code-switched and multilingual material with native speakers during interpretation.
Do you identify individual people?
No. We work at the level of themes, personas and tensions. Evidence is used to support findings, never to profile or single out individuals.
